Face to Skull — Memento Mori Line Art of Life and Death

Dark brown ink line art of a weeping face in profile beside the same profile as a skull, on a cream background
Face to Skull · Hand-drawn illustration · Hayley (haylienart)

Ink line drawing of a weeping face melting into its own skull — life and death in one line.

Face to Skull is a minimalist ink line drawing about life and death. On one side, a face in profile cries with its eyes closed; on the other, the same profile is stripped back to the skull underneath, so the two halves read as one continuous moment of mortality.

The dark brown ink lines are spare and confident, which gives the piece a quiet, surreal, gothic mood rather than a gory one. It is a modern memento mori — a reminder that the face we show and the skull we carry are the same thing — and the clean outlines also make it work as a tattoo design reference.

Because the drawing is line art on a transparent background, it is set up for light-colored products such as stickers, mugs, journals, framed prints and light tees. Face to Skull is an original hand-drawn piece of dark art by Hayley (haylienart), an artist based in Reno, Nevada.
